Clearing Up Myths & Misconceptions

One myth about leather pants is that they always shrink when exposed to heat.  This is somewhat false because the nature of leather is that it is relatively resistant to shrinking when exposed to heat.

Researchers Sabaric, Koturic, and Rogina-Car of the University of Zagreb found that size and thickness will affect how much leather shrinks in response to heat, especially considering that heat is applied during the tanning and processing steps in making leather.  That said, it’s still best to avoid using boiling hot water or placing your leather pants in a hot dryer.

A big misconception is that leather pants are easily damaged-which is primarily false.  Leather pants are made to be very durable, much more than standard fabrics.  Therefore leather pants are not easily damaged with everyday wear and care.

You can put leather pants in the dryer-just be sure to use only low to medium heat to prevent drying out the leather too much.

Leather pants should be snug to the body when worn, but we all know not everyone has the same body dimensions.  When you try on leather pants, you may find that they fit well in the legs but are loose in the hips, or they’re snug in the waist but loose on the legs or any number of imperfect fittings.

It may even be that you’ve owned a pair of leather pants for some time, and they’ve stretched in the knees with wear.  In any case, you can shrink leather pants in spots or all over to create a perfect fit for your body.

Variations or Methods of Shrinking Leather Pants

There are a few different methods of shrinking leather pants, all are relatively easy.

  1. Hair dryer method – This technique is perfect for shrinking targeted spots on leather pants.  Simply spray the leather pants with water in a spray bottle, then use low or medium heat on the hair dryer.  Keep the hair dryer at least 3 inches from the dampened spot and wave it from side to side.
  2. Soaking method – Probably the easiest but most uncomfortable method is to put on the leather pants, soak them well, then wear them around outside on a sunny day.  The sun isn’t required, but it speeds up the process.  If you choose this method, consider wearing something waterproof under the leather pants while they’re soaked.
  3. Air dry method – A more straightforward method to shrink leather pants all over is to soak them in the bathtub and hang them to dry.  Just be sure to hang them away from direct sunlight where there’s good airflow.  This method will prevent damage from heat.
  4. Clothes dryer method – This is the most effective and easiest method for shrinking leather pants.  Soak the leather pants well, then put them in a dryer set to a lower heat setting for no more than 20 minutes.  There is a higher risk of leather damage using this method, so check on the pants every five minutes or so to prevent over-drying, which leads to cracking.

Characteristics of Shrinking Leather Pants

Skill Level of Shrinking Leather Pants

Shrinking leather pants does not require a great deal of skill in general, but there are a couple of things you’ll want to keep in mind.  Leather can be damaged with high heat and certain chemicals, so be sure to use the right tools and settings.

Feel the leather as it dries either by air or in the clothes dryer, and don’t let it dry out too much.  This can lead to leather stretching and cracking, which is not a good look.  Use warm to hot water, a low to medium heat setting on the clothes dryer, and check the leather pants often to prevent damage.
